One of the most famous battleships of WWII was the German Bismarck. At the time it was the largest battleship ever commissioned, with the 251m-long ship displacing 50,900 tonnes when fully loaded. Despite all her fame, the Bismarck only ever participated in one combat operation, and that lasted a brief 135 hours! During an attempt to break out into the Atlantic Ocean to ravage Allied shipping in May 1941, she was engaged in the Denmark Strait by the Royal Navy. In the battle this mighty German battleship sunk HMS Hood, the pride of the British fleet. However, it was Fairey Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal that humbled this warship two days later. Torpedoes dropped by these biplane aircraft jammed the Bismarck’s rudder and allowed British ships to engage her with their guns. On 27 May 1941 the Bismarck sank with the loss of 1,995 of her 2,200 crewmen.

This year marks the anniversary of this famous battleship’s first and last fight. To commemorate the Bismarck’s sinking, Dragon has put together an interesting combination of a 1/700 ship kit as well as an identically scaled Fairey Swordfish. In this scale the aircraft is tiny, but it’s a brand new tooling. The “Stringbag” aircraft (as it was called by many) is extremely well detailed, and it even carries the torpedo that played such a pivotal role in the ship’s demise. The plastic ship, meanwhile, comes from the highly acclaimed 1/700 scale kit that has previously been released. This kit is brimming with detail, and it also includes a wide array of photo-etched parts. A number of new parts have been created especially for this release, including the waterproof covers for the main guns. Made of DS, these realistically mimic the material of the original covers. In association with this DS material, the main gun barrels have all been remastered too. Also new are 3.7cm twin AA guns, and 2cm Flakvierling cannons. With this combination of ship and aircraft, modelers can relive the defining battle played out by the Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine.
